A Tiny Bit of History
We highly recommend taking a moment to learn about the history of this impressive church.
The village of Christianoupoli (also known as Christiani or Christianoi) is home to one of the most important Byzantine monuments in the Peloponnese: the Church of the Transfiguration of the Savior.
The complex dates back to the 11th century (1070–1075) and originally included the church and an adjoining episcopal palace to the west (semi-ruined today). The church functioned continuously until 1825, when it suffered damage during the raids of Ibrahim Pasha, followed later by the 1886 earthquake, which caused the collapse of the dome and the south side.
In 1921, it was declared a protected monument. Restoration works began in 1938, were interrupted by World War II, resumed between 1948–1950, and finally concluded in 2014, restoring the monument to its present form.
